چکیده

INTRODUCTION The DLT (Direct Linear Transformation) algorithm, the most frequently used calibration algorithm, is based on the so-called collinearity condition; i.e. the object, image, and projection center form a straight line. This condition, however, does not hold in an underwater analysis setting due to the nonlinear image deformation caused by refraction at the water-air interface (Figure 1) [1]. The immediate outcome of the image deformation is an increased calibration/reconstruction error when compared to its above-water counterpart.

Underwater Stereo Mapping with Refraction Correction

This work presents the a method for underwater stereo mapping and localization for detailed inspection tasks. The method generates dense, geometrically accurate reconstructions of underwater environments by compensating for the negative effects caused by image distortions due to refraction. A refractive model of the camera and enclosure is calculated offline using calibration images and produce...

Refractive Calibration of Underwater Cameras

In underwater computer vision, images are influenced by the water in two different ways. First, while still traveling through the water, light is absorbed and scattered, both of which are wavelength dependent, thus create the typical green or blue hue in underwater images. Secondly, when entering the underwater housing, the rays are refracted, affecting image formation geometrically. When using...

Calibration of Housing Parameters for Underwater Stereo-Camera Rigs

When using perspective cameras underwater, the underwater housing with its glass interface between water and air causes the light rays to change their direction due to refraction. In applications where geometrical properties of images are exploited without explicitly modeling refraction, i.e. when using the perspective pinhole camera model, this leads to a systematical error. This error is depe...

Underwater 3D Reconstruction Based on Physical Models for Refraction and Underwater Light Propagation

In recent years, underwater imaging has gained a lot of popularity partly due to the availability of off-the-shelf consumer cameras, but also due to a growing interest in the ocean floor by science and industry. Apart from capturing single images or sequences, the application of methods from the area of computer vision has gained interest as well. However, water affects image formation in two m...

Camera Self-Calibration in Underwater Environment

This paper presents a self-calibration technique for a camera mounted on an underwater vehicle designed to perform the 3D reconstruction of underwater scenes. Our aim is to identify the intrinsic parameters of the camera with methods that are adapted to the operational constraints on Ifremer’s underwater vehicles. The optical system is composed by a single vertical camera located below the unde...
